Mit dem Tod von Marcel Ophüls verlor die Filmwelt eine der wichtigsten Stimmen des dokumentarischen Kinos und einen wichtigen Forscher des Weimarer Kinos sowie einen Filmemacher der Aufarbeitung der NS Verbrechen. Als Sohn des Namensgebers unseres Festivals, Max Ophüls, hat Marcel sein eigenes, unverwechselbares Vermächtnis geschaffen. Sein monumentales Epos THE MEMORY OF JUSTICE ist ein unbequemer und schonungsloser Film über die Nürnberger Prozesse, die Schuldfrage und die bleibenden moralischen Dilemmas, die sich aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ergeben. Es ist und bleibt der einzige beispiellose Prozess zum gravierendsten Völkermord und der Verantwortung von Menschen und der Frage nach Reparationen und Wiedergutmachung.

Um das Leben und sein Werk zu würdigen, zeigt das Filmfestival in diesem Jahr THE MEMORY OF JUSTICE.
Der Film wird am Festival Mittwoch im Cine Star (Barrierefrei) gezeigt werden. Dr. Andreas-Benjamin, der Enkelsohn von Marcel Ophüls, wird für ein Gespräch vor Ort sein.
Weitere Screenings sind am Sonntag, den 18.1.2026 (auf Einladung) sowie am 27.1.2026, dem Internationalen Tag des Gedenkens an die Opfer des Holocaust.

With the passing of Marcel Ophüls, the film world lost one of the most important voices in documentary cinema, a key researcher of Weimar cinema, and a filmmaker who dealt with Nazi crimes. As the son of the namesake of our festival, Max Ophüls, Marcel created his own distinctive legacy. His monumental epic THE MEMORY OF JUSTICE is an uncomfortable and unsparing film about the Nuremberg Trials, the question of guilt, and the enduring moral dilemmas arising from World War II. It is and remains the only unprecedented trial dealing with the most serious genocide, the responsibility of individuals, and the question of reparations and restitution.

To honor his life and work, this year’s film festival is showing THE MEMORY OF JUSTICE.
The film will be shown on Wednesday at the Cine Star (barrier-free). Dr. Andreas-Benjamin, Marcel Ophüls grandson, will be with us for a Q&A after the Film.
Further screenings will take place on Sunday, January 18, 2026 (by invitation) and on January 27, 2026, Holocaust
Remembrance Day.
